A Sweet & Bitter Providence

I was given this book for my birthday this year. I am so glad I received it. John Piper wrote this on the book of Ruth. I have always loved the book of the Bible. Piper draws out so many things that I had never seen or knew before regarding Ruth. It consists of 4 chapters and is so incredibly easy to read. I wanted to share some things I found interesting and things I learned from this awesome book.

Here is a brief summary of Ruth: The setting for the Book of Ruth begins in the heathen country of Moab, a region northeast of the Dead Sea, but then moves to Bethlehem. This true account takes place during the dismal days of failure and rebellion of the Israelites, called the period of the Judges. A famine forces Elimelech and his wife, Naomi, from their Israelite home to the country of Moab. Elimelech dies and Naomi is left with her 2 sons, who soon marry 2 Moabite girls, Orpah and Ruth. Later both of the sons die, and Naomi is left alone with Orpah and Ruth in a strange land. Orpah returns to her parents, but Ruth determines to stay with Naomi as they journey to Bethlehem. This story of love and devotion tells of Ruth's eventual marriage to a wealthy man named Boaz, by whom she bears a son, Obed, who becomes the grandfather of David and the ancestor of Jesus. Obedience brings Ruth into the privileged lineage of Christ.

Thoughts from A Sweet & Bitter Providence:

Ruth 1:20-21 "She said to them, 'Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty."

God is at work in the worst of times. Piper says the point of this book is not just that God is preparing the way for the coming of the King of Glory, but that he is doing it in such a way that all of us should learn that the worst of times are not wasted. Naomi felt that God was dealing bitterly with her that she was unable to see how God was working things for her good and for His glory. Naomi was hopeless and despondent. I love what Piper says, "When we have decided that God is against us, we usually exaggerate our hopelessness. We become so bitter we can't see the rays of light peeping out around the cloud." Piper also says that seeing is a precious gift, but that bitterness is a powerful blindness. How true that is, when we allow ourselves to become bitter our vision is not clear. Piper points out what if Naomi could have seen all the ways God was working in the bitter providences in her life? Would that have changed her outlook on her seemingly "hopeless" situation? "God the Almighty reigns in all the affairs of men. He rules the affairs of nations" Psalm 34:19 says, "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all." I love this verse. God allows things to happen in our lives. So often though we only want God to give us the good things in life, the sweet things. We don't ever want the bitter or the harsh things in life. However, what we need to realize is that through the bitter and harsh providences in our lives, God is always working those things for our good. It may not seem like it at the time, but on the other side of the bitter providence is when the sweetness comes.

"In all the setbacks of our lives as believers, God is plotting for our joy." What an amazing thing to think about. The creator of the universe is plotting for my joy even in the darkest places of my life. Piper says, "Life is not a straight line leading from one blessing to the next and then finally to heaven. Life is a winding and troubled road. Switchback after switchback. And the point of biblical stories like Joseph and Job and Esther and Ruth is to help us feel in our bones (not just know in our heads) that God is for us in all these strange turns. God is not just showing up after the trouble and cleaning it up. He is plotting the course and managing the troubles with far-reaching purposes for our good and for the glory of Jesus Christ." Amazing that God gave us so many examples of people who are struggle with things like us so we would know we are not alone. God is there walking with us and at times carrying us!

Ruth was not a Jew, but she is in the lineage of Jesus. I love this because Christ came and died for everyone. Piper says, "The glory of Christ is that he comes from the nations and dies for the nations. His blood was shed for the nations, and the nations' blood ran in his veins. The redeeming work of Christ is free and undeserved. It is intended for every ethnic group on the planet." Christ is the all encompassing Savior of the world. Piper quotes Joni Erickson Tada, "the deep and unshakable conviction that the pains of life are not exceptions to God's love of his children. They are expressions of his love." What a powerful statement and an amazing outlook on life and the obstacles we face.

Ruth 4:14-15 "Then the women said to Naomi, 'Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer; and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him."

Piper ended the book with this statement, "God is at work in the darkest times-for our good and Christ's glory. He will see to it that the glory of his Son fills the earth and that in him we find everlasting joy." This book has served as such an encouragement to my life. Knowing not only in my head, but more importantly in my heart that God is still working in my life even through the dark, bitter times has been amazing. When I finally know this in my heart, I will implicitly trust God in every aspect of my life. At times, it may be a battle when situations occur in our lives and we don't understand. It is easy to become bitter, but choosing to see past the bitterness will free us from missing things God may be trying to teach us through those difficult situations in our lives.

A New Year, A New Decade, A New Journey

Hello friends and Happy New Year! 2010 is gone and 2011 is here. This new year is bringing new journeys my way! I ended 2010 and began 2011 in Atlanta with my mom. I had the opportunity to serve at Passion as a volunteer in the 268store! What an amazing and powerful experience. I was able to meet so many awesome students and hear some amazing stories of how God is working in their lives. There is nothing like seeing 22,000 university students worshipping Jesus. The conference was 4 days, January 1-4. Students were led in worship by Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, Kristian Stanfill, Charlie Hall, Christy Nockels & Matt Redman. Students heard messages from Louie Giglio, Francis Chan, Beth Moore, David Platt, John Piper and a few others. Students and volunteers alike were challenged to carry the name of Jesus everywhere! Here are my reflections from Passion 2011 Atlanta:

-Jesus should be at the bottom of your joy.

-Pray for God to give you the heart of your desire, not the desire of your heart.

-Together we are a force for good.

-Jesus, you are ALL to us.

-It is our mission, no matter what our skill set & passions to advance the gospel where we are.

-My hope is in the Lord.

-It is always about Jesus and His Glory and We are to make Him famous.

Passion's Do Something Now campaign was incredible to see. Students and volunteers had the opportunity to give financially to 10 global causes ranging from clean water in India, homes in Haiti, Freeing women and children from sex trafficking in Philippines and Bolivia, Small business loans in Afghanistan, Feeding hungry children in South Africa, Life saving surgeries for babies in Uganda, Compassion International, Sending Bibles to the unreached in Colombia to Towels & socks for the homless of Atlanta. The goal was $470,000. This is how awesome God is....

-Homeless: Given: 18,400 towels. 68,000 pairs of socks for Atlanta area shelters!

-Clean Water: $75,000 for 15 wells in villages in India. Given: 24 wells!

-Micro-Finance: 200 small business loans for Afghan entrepreners totaling $40,000. Given: 387 loans!

-Bibles: 20,000 New Testaments to unreached in Colombia at $20,000. Given: 31. 554 New Testaments!

-Feeding Children: Feed 1, 000 at risk children in South Africa for one year at $50,000. Given: Feeding 2, 225 children!

-Homes: Build 15 homes in Haita at $54,000. Given 39 homes!

-Sponsor Children: Sponsor 150 children and provide family essentials at a cost of $100,000. Given: 442 children sponsored!

-Human Trafficking: Restoration and a future for 10 girls trapped in sex slavery in Bolivia at a cost of $36,000. Given: 22 girls rescued/restored!

-Surgeries for Children: $50,000 to fund 50 Hydrocephalus surgeries in Uganda. Given: 142 surgeries!

-Rescue Women: $45,000 to fund 10 rescue operations to free sex slaves in the Philippines (each operation frees 15 women on average). Given: 29 rescue operations!

-Plus, College fund for Haitain earthquake survivor, Therissa Leo. Given: $23,106! (This was not planned beforehand or factored into the $470,000).

The total given at Passion 2011 Atlanta: $1,167,249.24

All I've got to say is don't count this generation out! Do Something Now = worship + justice! The dollar amount is staggering, but these students and volunteers understand what it means to be the hands & feet of Jesus! These numbers brought me to tears. Lives will be transformed because of the generosity and love out of which this money was given! May Christ be made famous! For more info on Passion go to http://www.268generation.com/

Needless to say, my new year has gotten off to a fantastic start! I also have started grad school this week! I am pursuing a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in both Mental Health Counseling and Family & Marriage Therapy! I'm starting off with Counseling Skills and Foundations of Counseling! My first week of class was awesome! I am so excited to soak up and learn everything I can about the field of Counseling Psychology! Stay tuned for grad school updates!!

It's the start of a new year, a new decade and a new journey. I wait with anticipation to see how God will work in my life over this year! I know 2011 is going to be a phenomenal year for me! Jesus, let everything I do bring glory to your name!

Stability In An Unstable World

Last night as I lay in my bed with my computer on my lap, I was watching a video blog update on Matt Chandler. For those of you who don't know who he is, he is the lead pastor of The Village Church in Dallas, Texas. Last Thanksgiving he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and has terminal brain cancer. He has been on very aggressive chemo drugs and has done radiation. He does video updates usually after he has MRI's to let everyone know the prognosis. This particular video blog update I was watching last night was from his wife, Lauren back in April. What she had to say really encouraged me. She read from Isaiah 33:5-6, "The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness, and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is Zion's treasure."

I thought to myself, here is a woman, a Godly woman, who could lose her husband to brain cancer and yet she has such peace. Even in the unstability of their situation, she rests in the truth that the Lord is her stability. I found such comfort and encouragement in that verse and in the Chandler's story. That even amidst the craziness and unstable situations in my life, the Lord will always be my stability. I so needed to be reminded of that. I think that sometimes, I get so overwhelmed by the changes that occur in my life that make me feel unstable and that my world is going to crash in on me at any given moment. But, what I love about the Lord is that even in the craziness of my ever-changing life, He is the one constant. He is the only one I can always count on, who will never disappoint me and who will pick me up when I fall. I am amazed at the grace, mercy and character of my Lord and I am so humbled and thankful. Isaiah 33:6 has become one of my favorite verses and will always serve as a reminder to me that my Lord is my stability. I rest in this truth and fully trust Him with my life!

As of November 12, 2010, almost exactly 1 year later, Matt Chandler had another MRI and the scan was 100% clean. All I can say is how great is our God! Continue to pray for the Chandlers, as Matt will continue on chemo and has another MRI in January!!!

On the DL....

Well, I am officially on the DL and for those of you who don't know baseball lingo, that means the disabled list. I babysit for an orthopedic surgeon and he looked at my ankle tonight. I not only sprained my ankle, but I managed to sprain it on both sides which isn't the norm. The good news is that I didn't tear any ligaments, just strained them pretty good! So I of course asked him about working out. I can ride a stationary bike, swim and I'm allowed to lift weights. I just can't do any running. I won't be able to run for 3 more weeks. So I'm trying to figure out how P90x will work with a sprained ankle. I am going to continue doing P90x, but I will only do the exercises that work my upper body. I'll continue to rest my ankle and do everything I'm supposed to do for it. I will blog about my work out tomorrow and also post my thoughts on Chapter 2 of Radical! Stay tuned for updates!

A Sprained Ankle....

So this past weekend I was in Clearwater for my best friend, Kristina's wedding. I had the best time. By the end of the weekend all of the bridal were good friends! We made some awesome and quite hilarious memories. I am so honored that I was able to be part of Kristina and Matt's special day! I love them both and would not have missed this for anything! That is why my blog has been pretty quiet for the past couple of days. After the wedding I went over to Treasure Island to spend some time with my parents and Mama Jo! It was awesome and I can't wait to go back! I love my Mama Jo, she is my Florida grandmother! My parents came back yesterday and I stayed another night with Mama Jo. We just hung out on the couch and watched tv. It has been a fabulous Labor Day weekend and I didn't want to go back to work today.

This week marks the start of week #5 in P90x. However, over the weekend I managed to somehow sprain my right ankle. I wish I had a good story of how it happened, but I honestly I have no idea. It's bruised and all swollen which is not okay. I am hobbling around like I'm 80...haha! So needless to say I was less than enthusiastic when I realized this would definitely hamper my workouts this week. Since I am now injured I am still going to workout, but I will only be doing the workouts that don't require me to workout my legs. That means that plyometrics, yoga, legs (of legs & back) and kenpo are all out this week. I will be working out chest, shoulders and triceps tomorrow along with abs! Today also marks Day 30!!! Woohoo...I'll be taking pictures tonight and I cannot wait to compare them to my before pictures! Despite this minor set back, I will not give up and I will finish P90x! Also be looking for my review on Chapters 2-3 of Radical this week too! I hope everyone had an awesome Labor Day weekend!

Not Giving Up

Yesterday I started Week #4 which is my Recovery week. On the agenda for day 1 of my recovery week was Yoga. I have to say I had absolutely no desire to do this at all. Even though I didn't want to do it, I perservered and made it through yoga! I'm glad that it's over for the week! Today was a new workout, Core Synergistics. Oh my, this was hard and my core was worked a lot. Tony has you do all kinds of things like banana, super man, the Dreya roll and so many more. I really enjoyed this workout and I'm looking forward to doing it again Thursday. I love how working out is making me feel!

My devotional today comes from Hebrews 13:16, "Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." The title of my devotional today was Not Giving Up. The story was about how we can't convince people to believe in Jesus. Even though we can't convince people to believe in Jesus, it is still our responsibility to share the Gospel with unbelievers. That's what this verse in Hebrews is talking about. Sharing the gospel may not always go over well with people, but we are not to neglect it, we are to share it. When we do we are pleasing God! I hope this encourages you to keep on sharing the Gospel with those who have not heard the Gospel before.

Something to think about...

Someone Worth Losing Everything For

I finished week 3 today!!! Woohoo!!! I can't believe I've made it this far and I am beyond excited. It was my Kenpo day. I just love this workout. I think I had a smile on my face the whole time I worked out. I'm sure for most people that wouldn't be the case. That's okay, because I love it and I have fun doing it! My kicks are getting better and higher. I'm also punching harder too. So watch out, I'm rough and tough!! I will start week #4 which is my Recovery week on Monday. I'm not sure what to expect, but I know it will be great.

So when I started my P90x journey, I also said that I would be doing a book review. I started Radical this week and I have finished Chapter 1. All I can say is WOW! This book is going to absolutely rock my world and challenge me in so many ways. Chapter 1 is entitled, "Someone Worth Losing Everything For, What Radical Abandonment Really Means". David Platt doesn't mess around, he just puts it all out there. I just want to share some of the highlights from Chapter 1. He starts the book with saying that Jesus is more like a minichurch pastor. He poses two questions from the start. He says that Jesus actually spurned the things that today's church culture said were most important. The first question, was I going to believe Jesus? The second question, was I going to obey Jesus? Platt is convinced that as Christ followers in American churches, we have embraced values and ideas that are not only unbiblical but that actually contradict the gospel we claim to believe. He says we have 2 choices, continue with business as usual or we can take an honest look at the Jesus of the Bible and dare to ask what the consequences might be if we really believed him and really obeyed him.

He said that he could not help but think that somewhere along the way we had missed what is radical about our faith and replaced it with what is comfortable. We were settling for a Christianity that revolves around catering to ourselves when the central message of Christianity is actually about abandoning ourselves. Platt cites Dietrich Bonhoeffer a German theologian. Bonhoeffer wrote in one of his books, the first call every Christian experiences is "the call to abandon the attachments of this world." The theme of the book is summarized in one potent sentence: "When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die." Bonhoeffer entitled this book, "The Cost of Discipleship." Platt says that while Christians choose to spend their lives fulfilling the American dream instead of giving their lives to proclaiming the kingdom of God, literally billions in need of the gospel remain in the dark. Platt challenges us to wake up to the countless multitudes who are currently destined for a Christless eternity.

He says this brings us to the crucial question every professing or potential follower of Jesus must ask: Do we really believe he is worth abandoning everything for? Do you and I really believe that Jesus is so good, so satisfying, and so rewarding that we will leave all we have and all we own and all we are in order to find our fullness in him? Do you and I believe him enough to obey him and to follow him wherever he leads, even when the crowds in our culture and maybe in our churches turn the other way? He closes the chapter with this, "Here we stand amid an American dream dominated by self-advancement, self-esteem, and self-sufficiency, by individualism, materialism, and universalism. Yet I want to show you our desparate need to revisit the words of Jesus, to listen to them, to believe them, and to obey them. We need to return with urgency to a biblical gospel, because the cost of not doing so is great for our lives, our families, our churches and the world around us."

Wow, I don't know about you, but that was a lot for me to swallow in the first chapter. What I have shared with you is only a small sampling of chapter 1. It is jammed full of amazing things. I have to say I am already thinking alot about what he has said so far. I would encourage you to buy a copy of Radical and read along with me!

Definitely something to think about...
